Grain: Refers to the alternating regions of relatively darker and lighter wood resulting from the differing growth parameters occurring in different seasons (i.e., growth rings).
Crosscut: Is when you cut a board across the grain (at a right angle to the direction of the grain). This process changes the length of the board.
Ripping: Is when you cut a board with the grain (parallel to the wood grain). This process changes the width of the board
Dimensional Lumber: is a term used for lumber that is finished/planed and cut to standardized width and depth specified in inches.
Assemble: To fit together the parts or pieces
Hardwood: Wood from a deciduous (broad-leaved) tree.
Softwood: Wood form a coniferous (evergreen) tree.
Linear Foot: A unit of measurement that is measured in a straight line equal to 12 inches.
Board Foot: is a measurement of lumber volume.
Square Foot: a unit of area equal to one foot by one foot square.
Shape: To cause a change to a particular form or pattern.
Countersink: Is a conical (having the shape of a cone) hole cut into a manufactured object, or the cutter used to cut such a hole.
